The First Round at a Glance, 11.10.2003

The central encouter of the men's competition in this round was the match Russia - Bulgaria. A curios coincidence is that twenty years ago the match USSR - Bulgaria was played also in the first round.

Today's match was very interesting. The favourites in the Championships managed to win 2½ :1½ , but this result was achieved with great difficulty. Peter Svidler on first board (playing White) defeated Alexander Delchev. Delchev had no difficulties in the opening - a traditional Ruy Lopez. In the middlegame Svidler produced a powerful passed pawn in the center and in the approaching time trouble Black was faced with practical difficulties.

Vassil Spassov (White) on second board against Grishchuk was the more active party thoughout the game. In Sicilian the Bulgarian grandmaster sacrificed a pawn in the middlegame and the game became very complicated. In this situation Black's time troubles and Spassov's bishop pair proved decisive.

Alexander Morozevich scored against Boris Chatalbashev on board three. The final score emerged after a draw between Ivan Cheparinov and Alexander Khalifman. Cheparinov (White) achieved a slight advantage in in Ruy Lopez and rejected a draw proposal, but later it turned out that this is the logical result. Good for the 17-year old Bulgarian chessplayer.

The second team of the host-country also registered a loss at the start: 1 ½ : 2 ½ against Poland. Peter Genov (Black) on board 1 defeated Markovski. One of the surprises of this round. Markovski achieved a promising position in the opening, but underestimated an Exchange sacrifice and the ensuing strong black counterplay.

One of the first finished games was the win of Alexey Shirov (ESP) over S. Atalik (BIH). A convincing game of the Spanish grandmaster in French Defence and a short one both by time and by number of moves.

A very unpleasant incident occurred in the first round. Two hours after the beginning of the round, the mobile phone of the World Champion Ruslan Ponomarev (UKR) rang and the match arbiter Toncho Demirev (BUL) assigned him a loss by arbiter decision. An extremely unpleasant incident, but … the Regulations must be respected! And they say explicitly that "no mobile phones are allowed in the playing area."

As to the women, Georgia had the most convincing start defeating the Czech Republic by 2:0. Russia beat Moldova 1 ½ : ½ . The same result achieved Bulgaria-1 against Slovenia, following a win of Emilia Jingarova (White) on board 2 over D. Kaps. The second Bulgarian team scored 1:1 with the favorites of Poland following two draws.
